PURPOSE:To obtain a nitrile in high selectivity, by subjecting a gaseous mixture of an organic compound containing a methyl group directly linked to a (hetero) aromatic ring or methyl group directly linked to C=C bond and NO to contact reaction in a catalyst of zinc oxide. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous mixture of a compound [e.g., compound shown by the formula I (R<1> is 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, or halogen; m is 0, or 1] containing CH3 directly linked to an aromatic ring, a compound (e.g., compound shown by the formula II) containing CH3 directly linked to a hetero aromatic ring, or a compound [e.g., compound shown by the formula III (R<2> is H, or CH3)] directly linked to C=C bond and NO is subjected to contact reaction on a catalyst of zinc oxide or zinc oxide supported on a carrier (e.g., silica, or magnesia) at 350-600 deg.C, to give a corresponding nitrile. The catalyst is prepared by dispersing a carrier into zinc nitrate, zinc salt of organic carboxylate, etc. or an aqueous solution containing it, neutralizing it with an alkali to give precipitate, calcining the precipitate at 400-1,000 deg.C. |
