<p>PURPOSE:To obtain an image which is distinct and has high contrast, by applying an electric field to a liquid crystal by using the residual polarization of a ferroelectric substance. CONSTITUTION:On an insulating substrate 12 consisting of a glass substrate, the first electrode A 13 and a first electrode B 20, consisting of an ITO are provided, and on the first electrodes A, B, a ferroelectric substance layer 14 consisting of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene is formed. Also, a second electrode 15 consisting of Cr is provided so as to be connected to the first electrode B 20 through a contact hole provided in the ferroelectric substance layer 14. An electric field applied to a liquid crystal is held by not a time constant of the liquid crystal itself but a spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric substance layer. In such a way, there is no unrevealing of image information caused by a leak current of the liquid crystal itself, and an image which is distinct and has the high contrast is obtained.</p> |
