A zoom lens comprising, from front to rear, a first lens unit of negative power, a second lens unit of positive power and a third lens unit, the first and second lens units being axially movable for zooming, and the zoom lens satisfying the following conditions: 1.2fW<¦f1¦<1.6fW 0.9fW<f2<1.3fW -0.35/fT<1/f3<0.3/fT 0.85fW<l1W<1.2fW 0<l2W/fW<0.3 0<l1T/fW<0.2 0.7<(l2T-l2W)/fW<1.2 1.2<¦ beta 2T¦<1.1 2ROOT fT/fW where F1, f2 and f3 are the focal lengths of the first, second and third lens units respectively, l1W and l2W are the first and second separations between the first and second lens units and between the second and third lens units respectively when in the wide angle end, l1T and l2T are the first and second separations when in the telephoto end, beta 2T is the image magnification of the second lens unit in the telephoto position, and fW and fT are the shortest and longest focal lengths of the entire zoom lens system respectively.
