A bearing, stuffing - box, or like article having at least one surface which is exposed to friction during use comprises a mixture of metal and non-metal particles consolidated to a whole under heat and pressure, the portion of the particle in the region of the surface subjected to friction having a higher non-metal content than the remainder, whereby the latter acquires a higher strength and the former acquires improved lubricating powers. The metal particles may be replaced wholly or partly by metal carbide particles. The article may be built up of layers of differing proportions or the non-metallic content may gradually decrease from the region exposed to friction. During manufacture the separate layers of particles may be separated by paper or metal sheets which are removed prior to pressing and heating, or the disposition of the particles may be attained by shaking, oscillating or centrifuging in a magnetic field if desired. The metal particles may be of tungsten, copper, aluminium, magnesium, silver, carbon steel, manganese steel, chromium steel, aluminium-silicon alloys, brass, bronze, copper-silver alloys, magnesium alloys.
