A device is claimed for determining the carbon content and temp. of liq. metal and comprises a bar (1) carrying a spherical sampler (3) inside which is a thermocouple (6) the soldered junction of which is located at the centre of the spherical sampler (3). The carrying bar (1) is water cooled and the sampler may be constructed from a number of different materials including steel, quartz, magnesite or zircon oxide and is protected by an outer refractory coating. The spherical sampler may be designed to be dismantled along its central axis and comprises two halves connected by pins.
