A lamp unit (10) which can be used, in particular, with traffic lights has a light source consisting of a large number of light-emitting diodes (13). All light-emitting diodes (13) generate a light of at least approximately uniform colour and form a light-emitting surface (14) of considerable extent in two directions which run perpendicular to each other. In order to make it easier for a person having defective colour vision to discriminate between the light generated by the lamp unit and light originating from other lamp units and to enable identification of the lamp unit (10), the light-emitting diodes (13) are configured in such a manner that when the lamp unit (10) is operated the character of the light emitted by each individual light-emitting diode (13) strongly varies between different parts (14A, 14B) of the said light-emitting surface (14). <IMAGE> |
