The invention relates to a process for replacing a pre-existing bridge with a new bridge, this new bridge being of the "fan shaped cable-stayed" type, and to a bridge usable for carrying out this process. The new bridge is built with its deck 1 under the deck 8 of the old bridge. Preferably the new deck carries temporary roadways 13 on either side of the perpendicular of the old deck. After the new bridge is positioned, the deck 8 and the pylons 7 of the old bridge are destroyed and the deck 1 of the new bridge is then lifted in one piece up to the height of the deck of the old bridge. Interruptions to traffic are therefore reduced to short periods or even totally avoided. The bridge for carrying out this process comprises means of raising the top stay 15 which carries the cables 4 in relation to the pylon 2. At the same time, means are provided to raise the ends of the bridge in relation to its supports by acting on anchor ties. <IMAGE>
