PURPOSE:To hydrogenate and deethylate most of ethylbenzene in the titled mixture into benzene in a high conversion rate with low xylene loss, by using a sulfided catalyst containing rhenium, specific acidic type substance of zeolite and alumina in a specific proportion. CONSTITUTION:An 8C aromatic hydrocarbon mixture containing ethylbenzene and xylene is brought into contact with a catalyst, containing (A) 0.6-20.0pts.wt. rhenium, (B) 100pts.wt. acidic type substance of zeolite having inlets of main cavities consisting of 10-membered oxygen ring and (C) 100-900pts.wt. alumina and subjected to sulfiding treatment in the presence of hydrogen to hydrogenate and deethylate most of the ethylbenzene into benzene. Furthermore, since the aforementioned catalyst has high ethylbenzene conversion activity with hardly any loss of xylene by side reaction, most of the ethylbenzene which has been conventionally difficult to convert in the above-mentioned mixture can be converted with hardly any loss of xylene. |
