The invention relates to a device for varying, while running, the volume of the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. In this device, the spark plug 30, or the injector, is at the centre of the movable element or small piston 3. The spark plug itself, or the injector itself, may constitute the movable element which causes the volume of the combustion chamber 9 to vary, and suitable means are provided for connecting the spark plug or the injector. Valves may be placed in the cylinder head, right around the spark plug or the injector. Taking off the superstructure of the device can be done very easily after simply unscrewing the nuts or bolts which fix the cover 5 to the cylinder head 2. The invention can be applied to internal combustion engines. <IMAGE>
