One embodiment of the two-dimensional optical modulator, according to the invention includes: - a liquid-crystal flat screen 6, each element of this screen having a transparency which can be controlled electrically by means of a video signal; - a first light source 1 supplying a beam 3 of incoherent light which is modulated by the liquid-crystal flat screen 6; - a two-dimensional optical valve 10 which includes a layer of photoconductive material and a liquid-crystal layer, these layers being controlled by an alternating-voltage generator 12 and are illuminated by a video image supplied by the matrixed screen 6 and the first light source 1; - a second light source 8 supplying the beam 9 of coherent light, this beam 9 being modulated in two dimensions by the valve 10.
