The bridge is designed so that the loads exerted by each pylon 2 on its foundation 3 have no horizontal element and so that there is no reaction between the deck 1 and the supports 5. Moreover, each pylon may be displaced horizontally on its foundation without disassociating it from the deck. To construct such a bridge in place of an old bridge to be destroyed, the new bridge is built at the side of the old bridge. Traffic is diverted, the old bridge is demolished, the foundations are extended if necessary and then the new bridge is moved into its final position. The invention is also applicable for compensating for future variations in the length of the deck. <IMAGE>
