Process for the production of fuel briquettes, in particular for generating heat for heating purposes, coke of sand fineness, if appropriate a further non-caking fine-grained carbon source and a bituminous binder being mixed and the mixture being formed into preforms. The fuel briguettes are produced from the preforms by subjecting the latter to a heat treatment. Preforms free of molten, caking carbon are used, the specific density of which is, as a result of the adjustment of the mixing ratio and compaction, greater than the bulk density of coke of sand fineness. For the purpose of heat treatment, the preforms are introduced into a heated rotary tubular kiln which, in its lower part, is filled with coke of sand fineness to such an extent that the heat treatment takes place in a coke immersion bed. <IMAGE>
