An ion-exchange material is prepared in the form of cross-linked, water-insoluble polyacrylonitrile fibres carrying covalently bound basic groups. The cross-linked fibre can be reacted with a diamine of the formula RNH - R<IV> - NH2, where R is hydrogen or alkyl and R<IV> is 1,2- or 1,3-alkylene, to introduce imidazoline or tetrahydropyrimidine groups or with a diamine of the formula: <CHEM> where R is hydrogen or alkyl, R min is alkylene and R sec and R''' are both alkyl, to introduce tertiary amine groups. The tertiary amine groups can be reacted with an alkylating agent to form quaternary ammonium groups. |
