The invention relates to a cuboidal masonry block for erecting fair-faced masonrywork. For the cost-effective production thereof, the proposed masonry block exhibits, on at least one side, a diagonal groove which runs longitudinally in the edge region between at least one side surface and the underside and/or the top side as well as a diagonal groove which runs vertically in the edge region between the at least one side surface and at least one of the end surfaces. Consequently, the masonry blocks can be laid in thin-bed mortar, with the result that vertical joints and horizontal joints with a high degree of dimensional accuracy are obtained, a joint pattern corresponding to the conventional construction type being achieved after the pointing of the diagonal grooves. The invention provides, as a border block or corner block or bonders in a masonry bond, a special form of such a masonry block, which exhibits a diagonal groove running around, in the edge region, between the underside and the side surfaces and the end surfaces or the top side and the side surfaces and the end surfaces. Consequently, all known masonry bonds, for example heading bonds or cross bonds, can be erected as fair-faced masonrywork using the proposed masonry blocks.
