The frequency-selective optical data recording and data reproduction apparatus generates a light beam which is directed at a recording medium (disk 5) and the wavelength of which sequentially assumes different values, the information bits being recorded or read at different wavelengths. In the case of this apparatus, the recording positions in the direction of movement of the light beam are arranged away from one another by a certain distance, with them partially overlapping. As a result, there is no need for a mechanism for stopping the movement of the light beam during the recording and reading of data, which simplifies the construction of the apparatus and makes data recording and reproduction more efficient. In addition to the data, error correction codes added to the latter are stored, the amount of information being reduced to a minimum and it being possible to correct an error caused by a physical defect or the like. In addition, the information recording errors are corrected in the apparatus on the basis of the error correction codes, thereby increasing the accuracy of reproduction.
