A magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus selectively records and reproduces video information on and from a length of magnetic medium. The apparatus has a text memory (12) for storing index data descriptive of information associated with a recorded content inputted, a write-in circuit (3, 9) for writing the index data into the text memory (12), and a read-out circuit (3, 9, 10) for reading out the content, stored in the text memory (12), from the text memory (12) and for converting it into an index data display signal of a predetermined format. The read-out circuit (3, 9, 10) then outputs the index data display signal after the conversion. The index data may include a flag indicating whether or not the recorded may be overwritten. <IMAGE>
