The invention relates to a method for monitoring wire stapling in book binding machines, especially the insertion of staples into booklets in the case of sections of saddle stitching booklets. The aim of the invention is to produce a method which enables the quality of the objects being processed to be increased and the occurrence of waste to be reduced. The object of the invention is to design the method is such a way that defective wire joints can be detected independently of the operating speed. The object is achieved in that a signal pattern, which is made up of a multiplicity of measuring points, is obtained for the wire stapling of a design product and stored, point-by-point comparison with the signal values for wire stapling of actual products is carried out and differences between desired and actual signals which are outside predetermined tolerance limits are indicated as defective wire stapling. Application of the method makes it possible to carry out point-by-point quality control of the wire stapling and the detection of deviations within tolerance limits. <IMAGE>
