The invention relates to a process for loading and unloading elongated bodies such as exchangeable cages 2 or equivalent from a railway truck 1, in which process the railway truck 1 does not have any fixed, accompanying handling devices for the exchangeable cages 2. In the process, the exchangeable cage 2 is lifted up from the deck of the truck 1 by means of manoeuvring devices 18 which make use of the structural parts 3, 5, 6 of the exchangeable cage 2 and lifting members 10, 12, 13 powered by an external power unit 8', and a turntable is arranged, by means of mechanisms and manoeuvring devices 19 which are known per se, beneath the rails 3 of the exchangeable cage 2, and the exchangeable cage 2 is swung into an essentially transverse position in relation to the truck 1 and is then dropped by means of a known method into a vehicle 8' equipped for exchangeable cages. <IMAGE>
