PURPOSE:To perform recording and reproduction with high density and high reproducibility, by performing the recording of data or the reproduction of recorded information at the position of a corresponding recording medium by detecting the position of the recording medium having a position coordinate axis which becomes reference on a coordinate axis. CONSTITUTION:By approaching a distance between a probe electrode 103 and a conductive material to around 1nm as impressing a voltage between them, position detection is performed by introducing a position coordinate system to the recording medium 1 having regular atom arrangement or an origin which becomes the reference formed arbitrarily by using the flow of a tunnel current based on the regular atom arrangement or a reference origin, and detecting change in a distinct tunnel current corresponding to the position coordinate system. And based on the result of the position detection, a recording or reproducing position on the recording medium 1 which shows relative position relation with the position coordinate system is specified, and also, the position control of a probe electrode 102 on the recording and reproducing position is performed. In such a way, it is possible to perform the recording with high density. |
