PURPOSE:To produce an anion exchanger of excellent hydrophilicity and pressure resistance, by hydrolyzing the glycidyl groups of gel particles obtained by a specified aqueous suspension polymerization, introducing glycidyl groups into the particles and modifying the introduced glycidyl groups by ring opening with, e.g., ammonia. CONSTITUTION:An anion exchanger useful as a packing for anion exchange chromatography is produced by hydrolyzing the glycidyl groups of gel particles obtained by effecting the aqueous suspension polymerization of a glycidyl monovinyl ester or glycidyl monovinyl ether (glycidyl methacrylate is the most desirable in respect of its reactivity and alkali resistance) and a polyvinyl ester or ether of a polyalcohol (e.g., ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) in the presence of a water-immiscible organic solvent (e.g., butyl acetate) and an acid (e.g., sulfuric acid) inert to the glycidyl groups, reacting the hydrolyzate with an epihalohydrin to introduce glycidyl groups thereinto, and modifying the introduced glycidyl groups by ring opening with ammonia or an amine (e.g., diethylamine). |
