A binder for taking up oil, oil paints, solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons from the surface of water and from floors, contains at least one component chosen from bark, peat and plant fibres. Pref. the cells of at least one component are at least partially opened up eg by passage through a hot screw press eg as described in PCT/CH83/00059. USE/ADVANTAGE - The materials have a high absorption capacity for the contaminants (7-900 wt.%) and provide rapid absorption (2-3 sec.). They are water-repellent and float on water, and in use form a compact layer which can easily be removed from the decontaminated surface without leaving an oil film. The materials are natural prods. which are non-toxic and biodegradable, which can be stored for long periods in a dry place, and which can be incinerated without causing pollution problems due to the low ash residue (2-3 %).
