NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, or a 2 or 3C mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl; Z and Z' are each a 1-4C alkyl or a 2-4C hydroxyalkyl; with the proviso that when both R1 and R2 are H, both Z and Z' are not methyl) and its acid adduct. EFFECT: 4-(β-Hydroxyethyl)amino-2-amino-1,3-dimethoxybenzene. USE: This compound is used as a coupler for dyeing a keratin fiber, especially human hair by coupling with a precursor of oxidation dye. PROCESS: This compound of formula I is obtained by reducing a 2,4- disubstituted-3,5-dinitrochlorobenzene of formula II to provide a compound of formula III, dehalogenating the obtained compound of formula III and thereafter alkylating or hydroxyalkylating the resultant dehalogenated compound.
