The gas cylinders are arranged in a frame, pref. in rows. - The equipment also comprises clamping and fixing devices. The bottles furthest from these devices are supported by holders, which are solidly fixed to a side member of the framework. - The next row of bottles are lined up by the first row, separated by support wedges. The bottles of the last row are fixed by elements operated by the clamping devices. Flexible spacing rods are passed through the gaps formed by the clamping element and support wedges respectively of each row. - A device for measuring the mass fo each bottle is attached to the frame. - Method involves the following:- The mass of each bottle is equalised before it is placed in the frame. For filling, the bottle clamps are loosened to give the bottles one degree of freedom of movement. The mass of the bottles is measured either individually or together, and in some cases the gas absorbing medium, for example acetone, is replaced. The bottles are filled, preferably together, while their mass is continuously monitored. Finally, the bottles are fixed in the frame.
