NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is alkyl). EXAMPLE:(2-Fluoro-4-hydroxy-5-acetylphenyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro--phthal imide. USE:A herbicide exhibiting excellent selectivity between crops and weeds. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reaction an aniline derivative of formula II with 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalic acid anhydride. The reaction is carried out usually in a solvent (e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene) at 50-150 deg.C, preferably 80-120 deg.C. The amount of the anhydride is usually 1.0-1.2 equivalent based on 1 equivalent of the compound of formula II.
