The frame (8) for supporting a mattress has a hinged end portion which lies flat on its supporting surface whilst the main part of the frame can be inclined to the horizontal at a variable angle. When raised to the horizontal the main part of the frame is supported on a pivoted link (3) attached to an L-section base (7). The link (3) is locked in its required position by a strut (3'). The L section base (7) has an additional attachment to the frame (8) in the form of a link with an elongated hole (10) which engages a pin fixed to the frame (8). The elongated hole prevents the base (7) swinging away from the frame but permits sufficient movement to enable the angular position of the frame (8) to be adjusted.
