Two collimators 11, 12, provided with point sources (C1, C2 Fig. 3), are arranged to project two beams 53, 54 symmetrical in relation to the line of sight OX, into the periphery of lens 6 of the optical system. The position of the line of sight is determined by determining the midpoint of the segment joining the images I1, I2 of the point sources formed by the lens, and the scaling factor by determining the length of this segment. The angle e1+e2 of the beams being constant by design is therefore known. Determining the position of the line of sight is not dependent on any focussing error. Each of the beams can be duplicated to determine the scaling factor after eliminating the focussing error. The invention can be applied to thermal cameras. <IMAGE>
