The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-chloro-5-aminomethylpyridine, of the formula (I), <IMAGE> which is characterised in that 2-chloro-5-cyanopyridine, of the formula (II), <IMAGE> is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel and of ammonia in a reaction medium which contains water and, if appropriate, an organic solvent, at temperatures of between 0@C and 60@C.
