For monitoring the rest-position of an actuator, in particular a vibration damper with adjustable damping, which is displaceable by an electric motor (3) between at least two rest-positions a monitoring device (15) is provided which responds to the motor current and generates an actuator travel signal which corresponds, on the one hand, to the difference between the short-circuit current drawn by the motor at a standstill multiplied by the duration of a time interval which includes at least the duration of the motor movement and, on the other hand, to the specific integral of the motor current over the duration of this time interval. The monitoring device compares the actuator travel signal required to generate a monitor signal representing attainment of the rest-position with at least one limit value. The monitoring device needs no additional rest-position registering means on the actuator and works independently of the movement response of the motor (3). <IMAGE>
