The Roots vacuum pump makes use of a feed of coolant to increase the mass flow, in order to achieve improved removal of the heat of compression. A coolant feed duct (24) connected to a source of coolant ends in at least one of the end walls (32) and in each of the two pump chamber halves (3a, 3b). A control disc (26, 28) is connected to each rotary piston (1, 2) so that it cannot twist; these discs have two control openings (30) diametrically opposite one another that can be brought into coincidence with the mouth (20, 22) of the coolant feed duct (24) during the rotation of the corresponding rotary piston (1, 2). The surface of the control disc (26, 28) in which these control openings (30) are formed closes the adjacent mouth (20, 22). The coolant is fed into a working chamber separated from the inlet in each case, so that the coolant is pumped to the outlet. <IMAGE>
