REMOVAL OF SOUR COMPONENTS FROM A GAS STREAM

Process for the removal of sour components, such as HCN and H2S, from a gas stream comprising the following steps: a) contacting in the presence of a base in a first contactor (1) the gas stream with a first aqueous solution containing dissolved sulphur in order to obtain a purified gas mixture and a second aqueous solution containing reaction products of the base and the sour components; b) cooling the purified gas mixture in cooler (26); c) contacting in a second contactor (36) the purified gas mixture with an aqueous reactant solution containing an oxidant to obtain a further purified gas mixture and an aqueous solution containing elemental sulphur and reduced oxidant; d) oxidizing at least a part of the reduced oxidant in the aqueous solution obtained in step c) in regenerator (45) and separating the aqueous solution in a regenerated aqueous reactant solution and a sulphur-containing stream; e) passing the regenerated aqueous reactant solution to the second contactor (36) for use as aqueous reactant solution; and f) separating in separator (55) the sulphur-containing stream into a sulphur-rich stream and an aqueous waste stream containing dissolved sulphur. u
