Drift-free converters, in particular analog/digital converters, require a very high equipment output if simultaneous conversion of a plurality of input variables requires a high resolution in conjunction with short conversion times. In order to correct the drift dependence of other converters at periodic intervals by calibration measurements without the need to interrupt the conversion during calibration, an additional converter calibrated at periodic intervals is used in addition to the regular converters required for the regular conversion. The additional converter sequentially undertakes the regular conversion of the input variables between two calibrations, with the result that each of the regular converters is temporarily relieved and can be recalibrated.
