In order to improve the ignition response, a spark plug is provided with a centre electrode which consists of a cup sleeve and whose base is connected on the inside to a highly conductive connecting wire which passes through the ceramic insulator to the ignition cable connection. There is a free air gap between the inner wall of the cup sleeve and the connecting wire. The housing of the spark plug is produced from a metal alloy which is very highly conductive both electrically and thermally and cannot be magnetised, and said housing has at the other end an earth clip which bridges the centre electrode and consists of a nickel-chromium alloy, and on which at least one electrode tip is fitted as the earth electrode.
