PURPOSE: To reduce propulsion resistance, miniaturize a unit and stabilize an embedded pipe by consolidating earth at the front face in the diametrical direction of a shield with an eccentrically-rotating rotary head and forming a self-supporting zone on the surrounding ground. CONSTITUTION: By rotating a rotary head 14 arranged before a bulkhead 18 provided across a shield body 12 is rotated with an eccentric-motion mechanism 52, earth at the front face is excavated. At this time, a part or the whole of excavated earth is pushed in the diametrical direction of the shield body 12 and consolidated. Springwater or muddy water is supplied forward by a liquid supply pipe 32, surplus water and earth in the ground are drained rearward together with the supplied liquid by a liquid drain pipe 34, thereby consolidating the entire ground in the diametric direction of the shield under a pressing force, and forming a consolidated zone 33 in the ground surrounding the shield. |
