A print wheel (5) for an impact printer using two or more hammers (17) includes at least two characters (11) carried by each print wheel beam (9). The characters on each row are shaped such that when they are moved into contact with the print wheel platen, they will contact the platen uniformly, compensating for the bending and torsional forces applied to the beam by impact of the respective hammer on the back of the character to be printed.
