A series of nootropic compounds of Formula I I wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or optionally substituted aryl; and X is a chemical bond, have been prepared. Pharmacological testing demonstrates that the series possesses cognition enhancing action and/or mild CNS stimulation.
