METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR ESTIMATING LIFE EXPECTANCY OF MECHANICAL STRUCTURES

<p>A method of and an apparatus for estimating the life expectancy of mechanical structures to which a repeated load is applied. The relation between the length of the greatest crack formed in the material to be estimated and the life ratio of such material is obtained beforehand by using test pieces of the material, and the length of the greatest crack formed at the surface of the material is estimated by an extreme value statistical process from the lengths of the greatest cracks each formed at one of several sampling faces of the material. The life expectancy of a mechanical structure is estimated based on the estimated length of the greatest crack and the life ratio.</p>
