PURPOSE:To obtain high performance both in low rate discharge and in high rate discharge by forming a separator comprising two layer mats having a specified fiber diameter, and pouring a specified amount of specific electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A separator having high economical efficiency is formed with two layer fiber mats wherein a fiber mat having a mean fiber diameter of 10mu or more is faced to a negative electrode and the other fiber mat having a mean fiber diameter of 8mu or less is faced to a positive electrode. Dilute sulfuric acid or dilute sulfuric acid containing a thickening agent to an extent capable of fluidizing whose volume is smaller than the micropore volume of a plate and the micropore volume of the smaller fiber diameter mat is poured to be absorbed and retained in the pores. Then dilute sulfuric acid containing a thickening agent to an extent not capable of fluidizing is poured so that the total amount of sulfuric acid is larger than the total micropore volume of the plate and the separator. The fluidizable electrolyte is retained in the micropores of the plate and the fine fiber mat, and the unfluidizable electrolyte is retained in the thick fiber mat and spaces around the plates. The high performance similar to a retainer type sealed lead-acid battery in high rate discharge and that similar to a gelled sealed lead-acid battery in low rate discharge are obtained. |
