The indicator comprises an electrical conductor 2 embedded in a body 1 from which there extends a stub 3. A removable piece 17 is fixed at 18 onto a filiform part 1' of the indicator. In order to mount the indicator, the stub 3 is pushed into a hole 9 pierced in the support plate 5 for the friction member and the filiform part 1' is folded back around one edge 7 of the plate, in order to exhibit an opening 10' in the piece 17 facing the end of the stub 3. The groove formed at the end of the stub 3 makes it possible to retain the removable piece 17 against the support plate 5 in order to fix the indicator onto this plate. Application to disc brakes or drum brakes for motor vehicles. <IMAGE>
