A liquid applicator or writing instrument for forcibly supplying a liquid (3) having a relatively high viscosity from a liquid reservoir (4) to a liquid-application member (33) is operated by rotating a control knob (28) to axially move a plunger (7) forward in the liquid reservoir (4) to force the liquid (3) contained therein to be supplied to the liquid-application member (33). The control knob (28) is rotatable in only one direction, while the plunger (7) is prevented from being moved forward when the control knob (28) is axially pushed forward. Consequently, the liquid (3) is forcibly supplied to the liquid- application member (33) only when the control knob (28) is rotated in the correct direction so that the liquid (3) is prevented from being forcibly supplied to the liquid-application member (33) when the control knob (28) is axially pushed forward by accident. <IMAGE>
