In known height-adjustment systems, the height of the pressure foot system cannot be easily adjusted to adapt to variations in fabric thickness. In the new arrangement, adjustment is automatic. To achieve automatic adaptation, the drive connection between the top transport foot and the pressser foot is designed as a sequential regulator. The sequential regulator is preferably a hydraulic regulator (27, 27') secured to the housing of the sewing machine and contains an adjusting piston (22, 22') and a sequential piston (26) which are held together by a measuring element designed as a spring (119, 125 or 201, 205 or 210, 212) in order to utilize the reaction forces on the stitching feet during the stitching process. The sequential regulator can be used for various types of top transport devices in sewing machines.
