PURPOSE:To smoothen reversing operation in running directions by controlling a continuously variable transmission in such a way that the operation mode is shifted into a drive mode by way of a start mode after a hold mode is once carried out, during such a speed change manipulation that the running direction of a vehicle is reversed. CONSTITUTION:A belt drive type continuously variable transmission 2 is composed of a primary pressure control valve 34 as a speed change control valve, a constant pressure control valve 38, a line pressure control valve 44 and a clutch pressure control valve 52 in a hydraulic circuit, and the valves 34, 44, 52 are controlled by a control section 98 through solenoid valves 42, 50, 58, respectively. The clutch pressure control valve 52 is provided so as to control the clutch pressure of a hydraulic start clutch 62. In this arrangement, the control section 98 controls the transmission so that the operation mode is inhibited from being shifted into a drive mode by way of a start mode when such a speed change manipulation that the running direction of the vehicle is reversed is carried out, and after a hold mode is once carried out at a speed less than a predetermined vehicle speed, the operation mode is shifted into the drive mode by way of the start mode. |
