A method for detecting the position of a vehicle, such as a forklift truck, especially of a satellite of a conveyor vehicle relative to a target marker at a range of up to several metres is proposed, in the case of which a target marker is scanned with a predetermined painting pattern by a light beam over a predetermined scanning angle, the reflected pattern is received by a photodetector, and the time at which the received signals produced by the painting pattern occur is measured. A device is provided, by means of a target marker which is arranged at the target location and has a predetermined pattern of strips, which are arranged at a distance from one another and whose reflectivity is different from that of the intermediate spaces between the strips, by means of a light transmitter whose beam paints the reflector as well as a detector device on the vehicle, and by means of an evaluation unit for determining and fixing measurement times until the occurrence of measurement pulses which correspond to the individual strips and are received by the detector device.
