The apparatus serves for rescuing persons involved in an accident on buildings, and comprises a rope-brake appliance which has a rotatable rope pulley, around which a textile rope running in through a rope-feed guide is at least partly wound, and a centrifugal brake which can be driven by this rope pulley. In order to permit simple manipulation of this apparatus when rescuing casualties, it is designed in such a way that the rope running in, before it enters the rope-feed guide of the rope pulley, is guided around a rope-deflection point situated above the rope pulley on the rope-brake appliance.
