The road milling machine has a roller cutter (11). Its housing (10) and drive (12) are all in a separate unit (9) attached to the rear of a tractor (2) with a loose coupling which allows a rapid change of cutting unit (9) for other units of various types. The alternative units may be cylinder, ring or trapezoidal cutters each with variable depths of cut as required. The plates of the cutter and the tractor (7,13) are bolted together in such a way that the bottom of the plates (7,13) is always a greater distance from the road surface than the depth of the cut. USE/ADVANTAGE - The independent cutter unit for road surface milling provides the means for a rapid change of cutter to suit the work in hand.
