Hydrogenation catalyst comprises at least one metal component supported on a carrier consisting of 20-60 wt. % amorphous alumina and 40-80 wt. % crystalline alumina having max. dia. of 35 Angstroms. - The silica-alumina carrier is pref. prepd. by admixing a basic Al cpd. such as Na aluminate and a basic Si cpd. (e.g. water glass) with aq. soln. of an acidic Al cpd. such as Al sulphate, adjusting the pH to 8.8-9 by adding mineral acid or caustic alloy to form hydrogel of silica-alumina. The hydrogel is aged by the addn. of hydroxy carboxylic acid such as tartaric acid or aminodicarboxylic acid such as glutamic acid, or its salt. Metal components having hydrogenation activity are impregnated with the carrier in two steps; in the first step, a Gp. VII metal (e.g. Fe, Co, Ni, etc.) is supported by the ion exchange method, and in the second step, a Gp. VI B metal (e.g. Cr, Mo, W) is supported.
