The invention relates to a radio-frequency resonator for accelerating ions, having four electrically conductive electrodes which are arranged concentrically with respect to a predetermined beam axis and are arranged alternately in pairs at a periodically alternating distance from the beam axis, adjacent electrodes being charged with opposite plurality, the period lengths of the periodically alternating separation between the electrodes and the beam axis increasing synchronously only in sections corresponding to the particle speed, at least some of the period lengths increasing to a greater extent than the ion speed, and the length of the non-synchronous sections being set by changing the amplitude of the radio-frequency voltage applied to the electrodes.
