A hinge mechanism for attaching a panel 9 to an electrical appliance, for example the door 15 of a dishwasher, comprises a pair of hinges 16, 17 for attachment to the panel 9 at spaced apart points thereon. Each hinge is coupled to the other via a foldable linkage which comprises a connecting rod 5 and angled members 6. The linkage is configured for pivotal attachment to the appliance. The connecting rod 5, angled members 6 and hinges 16 and 17 are pivotally coupled to one another so that an opening force applied to one of the hinges 16 is transmitted by the connecting rod 5 to the other hinge 17 thereby opening the other hinge. When the door is thus opened, the hinge mechanism expands so as to cause the panel to move outwardly and laterally in relation to the door thereby avoiding obstruction of the door during the opening operation. A spring 30 urges the panel 9 towards a closed position. <IMAGE>
