The locking mechanism is provided on a vertically retractable ships propulsion assembly whose power unit is contained in a housing which can be made to slide up or down in a vertical duct. It comprises a number of inclined locking elements in the upper part of the housing capable of exerting a pressure with a horizontal and a vertical component. The arrangement is such that, in the extended operating portion of the assembly, the vertical component locks the housing in portion whilst engaging a resilient seal between itself and a shoulder in the duct, and the horizontal component secures the housing laterally in the duct. It further comprises pivotable members in the lower part of the housing which act in horizontal direction to lock the housing in extended and retracted position.
