A device for production of useful energy using traffic as its energy source, has a flexible chamber (14) which is attached to the road or path along which the traffic is moving. This chamber (14) is connected to a cylinder (17) by means of a pipe (16) of smaller cross section than the chamber (14). A piston (18) is movably mounted within the cylinder (17). Cylinder (17) and chamber (14) are fluid (14a) filled and motion of traffic across the chamber (14) forces fluid (14a) to move the piston (18). An energy production device (24) is attached to the piston (18), to convert its motion to useful energy. A further device returns the piston to its initial position when the traffic has passed by.
