To ensure proper sealing of sewn shoes, the inner region of the seam must be coated. To effect this operation by machine, a tube arrangement (67) is inserted in the shoe element (7) in order to feed the coating product to a jet (69) provided at the end of the tube. This jet (69) is moved from the tip of the shoe towards the heel region and during this operation is pressed by spring action (85) against the limit formed between the upper and the sole. Preferably two pipes (67) with jets (69) are opened in the manner of scissors in relation to a pivoting axis (79), thus providing simultaneous coating of the seam region of both sides of the longitudinal axis of the shoe.
